Practical guide
Annual Leave Days in South Africa Explained
The Basic Conditions of Employment guidance provides a minimum annual leave entitlement, but contracts and collective agreements may offer more. Accrual and payout should be checked against the terms that apply to the worker.

Minimum leave entitlement
Department of Employment and Labour guidance states at least 21 consecutive days in an annual leave cycle, or by agreement one day for every 17 days worked or one hour for every 17 hours worked.
Taking leave and public holidays
The timing should be agreed, although the employer makes the final decision if agreement is not reached. A public holiday that falls during annual leave should not be counted as annual leave.
Unused leave value
Payment instead of statutory annual leave is generally not allowed while employment continues, except on termination. Use the calculator as an estimate and compare it with the leave balance and daily remuneration method on the employment record.
