Road calculations use kilometres, litres per 100 kilometres or kilometres per litre, and Rand. A route estimate is not turn-by-turn navigation. Check live directions before departure, especially where roadworks, border crossings, weather or closures may change the trip. Use the correct vehicle class for tolls and the actual vehicle’s recent consumption for fuel. For accommodation and flights, check whether VAT, service charges, baggage, parking, transfers, meals and refundable deposits are included.
Fuel cost per kilometre and per trip
The tool converts adjusted distance into litres using litres per 100 kilometres, then multiplies litres by the entered petrol or diesel price. Fuel cost per kilometre is the final amount divided by the same adjusted distance. Use the current price for the fuel grade the vehicle requires.
Why actual consumption matters
Load, hills, traffic, tyres, air conditioning and driving style can move real consumption away from a brochure figure. A full-tank measurement over representative driving provides a stronger input. Passenger sharing changes the amount paid per person, not the fuel consumed.
Avoid double-counting
Enter each cost once. Do not add tolls to “other costs” when tolls already have their own field. Do not add a refundable deposit to the non-refundable stay or hire total unless the question is how much cash must be available at checkout. If a room rate already includes breakfast or taxes, do not enter them again. If a route distance already includes the return leg or detour, do not multiply or buffer it a second time.
Check a second scenario
Keep the first result as a baseline, then change one assumption. For a road trip, test a higher fuel price or consumption figure. For a booking, test a different number of rooms or nights. For international spending, test the provider’s less favourable exchange rate. A contingency is useful for uncertain costs, but it should not replace researching a known price.
Limits of this estimate
The tool cannot see live traffic, a new toll tariff, a provider’s final exchange rate, fare restrictions, cancellation rules or an employer’s approval decision. Confirm the final amount with the vehicle fuel record and a current local pump price.
