Practical guide
APS Needed for Law at UJ
For law at UJ, first distinguish the BA Law, BCom Law and four-year LLB. The required subjects and mathematics routes are not identical. Calculate UJ APS from six academic subject ratings, excluding Life Orientation, then compare the complete requirements for the chosen qualification and intake.
Updated 15 October 2026
| 2027 programme | APS | English | Additional language | Mathematics route |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BA Law | 31 Maths / 32 Maths Lit | 60% | 50% | Maths 40% / Maths Lit 50% |
| BCom Law | 31 | 60% | 50% | Maths 50%; Maths Lit not accepted |
| Four-year LLB | 31 Maths / 32 Maths Lit | 60% | 50% | Maths 40% / Maths Lit 50% |
Three law-related qualification names
A BA Law, BCom Law and LLB are different qualifications, even though all contain law in their names. Start with the exact title and code rather than a general search for law points. Read what the qualification leads to and how it fits your intended route. Do not assume that admission to one qualification is equivalent to admission to another or that a later transition is automatic.
Calculate the UJ score before comparing it
The UJ APS uses achievement ratings for six academic subjects and excludes Life Orientation. Convert percentages with the NSC table and retain programme-required subjects. A general example of 72, 65, 61, 58, 54 and 47 gives 6 + 5 + 5 + 4 + 4 + 3 = 27. This example explains the calculation; it is not a published law threshold or a statement that those subjects meet a law programme’s conditions.
Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy routes
UJ programme tables distinguish mathematics routes for some law-related qualifications. BCom Law must not be treated as though it automatically shares the same Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy acceptance as the BA Law or LLB. Record the route used for your chosen programme and the corresponding score condition. If a course requires Mathematics, changing the name of a Mathematical Literacy result in the calculator would invalidate the comparison.
English and the additional language
A strong overall APS can hide a weaker language result. Keep the English requirement and the additional-language condition in separate columns on your checklist. Use the actual language level from your school report and compare the correct percentage or level. An English Home Language entry and an English First Additional Language entry describe different school subjects even where a programme permits either route. Check the wording for the specific qualification.
Build a law application comparison
Record the qualification title, code, intake, score method, score condition, English mark, additional language and mathematics route. Then add any further application or selection requirements stated for that route. If you consider more than one law-related qualification, create a separate row for each. This prevents a common mistake: taking the score requirement from one row and the subject conditions from another to create a combination that no programme actually offers.
When your result does not match the target
Check subject percentages and the six counted results first. Then identify whether the gap is the total, a language mark or a mathematics condition. A better elective might improve the APS without solving the actual subject problem. If you investigate another qualification or a future intake, check its progression arrangements and full requirements rather than assuming it is a guaranteed alternative route to your preferred law programme.
Keep the application outcome separate
Submitting an application, paying an applicable fee or reaching a displayed score does not itself create an offer. Keep submission records and follow the process for updated results. Closing dates and application arrangements can change between cycles, so this page does not claim that applications are open. The calculator provides a transparent academic planning result; the university determines the final outcome.
UJ law requirements for the 2027 intake
For 2027, BA Law and the four-year LLB list APS 31 with Mathematics or 32 with Mathematical Literacy. Both list English at 60%, an additional language at 50%, and Mathematics at 40% or Mathematical Literacy at 50%. BCom Law lists APS 31, English at 60%, an additional language at 50% and Mathematics at 50%; Mathematical Literacy is not accepted for that route. These are minimum requirements, not a guarantee of admission. Requirements checked 15 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions
Is BA Law the same as the LLB?
No. They are different qualifications and should be checked separately.
Can I use Mathematical Literacy for every UJ law route?
No. Compare the exact qualification and mathematics route; do not assume the rules are identical.
What APS does UJ list for the four-year LLB in 2027?
APS 31 with Mathematics or 32 with Mathematical Literacy, together with the programme language and mathematics conditions. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee a place.
