Cement, Gypsum, Lime and Pool Plaster Quantities

Choose the correct material model: site-mixed cement and sand or the declared consumption of a complete plaster product.

One plaster name does not give one bag count

Cement-and-sand plaster, gypsum finishing plaster, lime systems and specialised pool finishes do not share a universal recipe or coverage. Identify the exact coat, background and exposure before measuring. A quantity calculator helps translate a confirmed specification into a purchase estimate. It does not select the binder, decide exterior suitability or replace application instructions.

How the cement-and-sand model works

Site-mix mode begins with net area × specified thickness. One allowance is applied, then an entered dry-material volume factor estimates the combined bulk ingredient volume. Cement:sand parts divide that volume; loose cement bulk density converts the cement portion to mass and the bag mass converts it to whole bags. The factor, density and example ratio are explicit assumptions, not guaranteed production yield. Sand grading, moisture, bulking, measurement and workmanship can change real requirements.

A cement-and-sand arithmetic example

For 20 m² at 15 mm, geometric volume is 0.3 m³. With a chosen 10% allowance and factor 1.33, the modelled dry ingredient volume is 0.4389 m³. A hypothetical 1:4 split and 1440 kg/m³ cement bulk density give 126.4032 kg cement and 0.35112 m³ sand. Purchase three 50 kg cement bags for that model. These values illustrate the arithmetic; they do not prescribe the correct mix or a loose-delivered sand order.

Complete gypsum and lime products

Use manufacturer m² per bag at the exact thickness, or kg/m² at that thickness with the bag mass. For a hypothetical 20 m² surface, 10% allowance and 5 m² per bag, 22 ÷ 5 rounds up to five bags. Packs of four mean eight purchased bags. Those figures are example coverage, not a named product specification. Follow the complete product instructions rather than adding sand or cement as if every bag contained only a binder.

Thickness changes need matching product data

The product method does not silently scale labelled coverage when thickness changes. Obtain consumption for the intended coat system from the manufacturer and enter it explicitly. Skim coats and base plasters can have different permitted thicknesses and suitable backgrounds. Some gypsum plasters are specified for internal use; this does not establish suitability for external walls or wet immersion. Site-mixed lime blends with additional binder components need a different confirmed model.

Pool plaster and exterior exposure

For a pool finish, measure all treated surfaces including floor, walls, steps and curves, then use the selected product’s own consumption and system requirements. Pool coating, marble plaster and waterproofing are not interchangeable quantities. Follow the experienced contractor and manufacturer for substrate preparation, application and start-up. An area estimate cannot establish the pool structure or waterproofing performance. External wall plaster similarly needs the appropriate exposure, preparation and curing specification.

Comparing suppliers and quotes

99Tools is independent of PPC and Cashbuild. Match net area, thickness, coats, mix assumptions, bag size, product coverage, allowance and pack rounding before comparing outputs. The sand quantity is on the entered bulk-volume basis and does not automatically convert to delivered loose volume or tonnes. Optional quoted costs do not add VAT, so use one consistent basis. Water, additives, bonding products and other omitted work must be checked separately.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a cement bag size as gypsum coverage?

No. A bag mass alone does not establish installed coverage. Use the exact product consumption and thickness.

Does changing thickness automatically change bag coverage?

No. Enter revised manufacturer coverage or kg/m² for the new thickness.

Can I use the site-mix model for every lime plaster?

No. The model splits two parts, cement and sand. A different binder system needs its own confirmed data.

Is pool plaster the same as pool paint?

No. Use the selected finish or coating specification and its own coverage and application requirements.
