Gutter and Downpipe Sizing, Replacement Costs and Care
Material quantities help with an order, while drainage performance depends on the roof catchment and the complete system. Keep those questions separate when comparing replacement or repair quotes.

Gutter and downpipe sizes
Gutter profile, outlet arrangement and pipe size must suit the contributing roof area, local design rainfall and the hydraulic performance of the complete system. Roof-edge length alone does not establish how many downpipes are needed. The calculator does not assign a pipe diameter, a gutter fall, bracket spacing or outlet spacing. Use the exact manufacturer’s capacity information and the project drainage design, including overflow arrangements, discharge route and any restrictions at outlets or connections.
Optional rainfall runoff estimate
If you already have the applicable design contributing area, rainfall intensity and runoff coefficient, enable the separate inflow calculation. Q in litres per second = area in m² × intensity in mm/hour × coefficient ÷ 3600. One millimetre of rain over one square metre is one litre. This is an entered inflow estimate only: it is not a capacity test and does not divide flow equally between planned outlets. Use the area basis required by the design method; do not automatically substitute sloping roof surface area, annual rainfall or a town-wide average.
Gutter and downpipe replacement cost
Enter current quotes per ordered stock length or per purchased linear metre for gutters and pipes. Add actual fitting quantities and their unit prices, then any separately quoted installation, removal, cleaning or disposal, access equipment and delivery. Use one VAT basis and avoid repeating services already included in another quote. No live South African price list is supplied. A zero line remains unpriced, so a partial entered total is not a complete replacement quotation. Seamless gutter measured and priced to installed runs should be quoted on that actual basis, not forced into an unsuitable stock-length assumption.
Replacement, repairs and cleaning
Leaks and overflow can have different causes, including debris, damaged components, failed joints, displaced supports or a system that cannot carry the design flow. Assess the cause before deciding between cleaning, repair and replacement. Ask a local contractor to define the inspection, access, removed material, repair extent and disposal included in the quote. Do not choose a larger pipe or reseal every joint without checking the actual problem and product requirements. For cleaning, use the manufacturer’s care guidance and safe access arrangements; the page does not identify nearby contractors or claim that a quoted service is available.
Rainfall example without a capacity claim
An illustrative design contributing area of 120 m², intensity of 150 mm/hour and coefficient of 1 gives 5 L/s using the unit conversion above. These are arithmetic assumptions, not a recommended rainfall value for a South African town. The number does not prove that two outlets can each receive 2.5 L/s: flow distribution depends on the roof, gutter falls and outlet positions, and capacity must be checked for the actual profile and arrangement. Siphonic drainage is a distinct designed system and should not be assessed by this conventional material schedule.
Compare the same replacement scope
Ask each supplier or installer for the exact profile, material, pipe sizes, lengths, fitting codes, included supports and service scope. State whether removal, cleaning, delivery, access equipment and disposal are included, and whether VAT is included. A lower material-only price is not directly comparable with a complete installed quotation. If part of the system is retained, have its compatibility and condition checked rather than assuming every existing fitting can be reused. For a near-me search, verify the provider’s service area and obtain a site-specific quote; this calculator does not supply a contractor directory.

Frequently asked questions
Does the calculator select gutter and downpipe sizes?
No. It estimates scheduled materials. Hydraulic sizing needs the relevant area, rainfall, outlet arrangement and system capacity information.
How much does gutter and downpipe replacement cost?
Use the current material and contractor quotes. The total includes only the entered lines, with zero prices left unpriced.
What does the rainfall calculation show?
It converts an entered contributing area, rainfall intensity and coefficient to litres per second. It does not verify gutter capacity or prescribe outlet count.
Does this include installation, repairs and cleaning?
Only the separately entered quoted service totals. Scope, access and product-specific installation or care requirements need confirmation.
