Practical guide
How Many Boxes of Laminate Flooring Do I Need?
Whole-box rounding matters as much as the room measurement. Use the selected product’s coverage and keep flooring and underlay allowances separate.

How much laminate flooring do I need?
Measure the area that will actually receive the selected flooring. Add separate, non-overlapping rectangles for an L-shaped space, or enter a measured area for each room. Subtract only areas that genuinely remain uncovered under the specified installation plan. Do not subtract loose furniture. Permanent cabinets and fixed units need the product’s installation requirements checked rather than a blanket deduction rule. The calculator rejects deductions larger than a room and requires a positive combined net area.
Laminate flooring calculator in metres and square feet
Choose metres for room dimensions and m² for direct areas and deductions, or feet for dimensions and ft² for those areas. The unit selection applies to every room line; values are not automatically converted when you change it. Product pack coverage remains m², and plank cover dimensions remain mm. The tool converts ft² to m² using 0.09290304. One m² is about 10.7639 ft². Avoid combining the length of one room with the width of another.
How many boxes of laminate flooring do I need?
Net area × (1 + entered allowance/100) gives the target flooring area. Divide by the actual coverage per box and round up to whole boxes. Use the selected product’s label; boxes do not all contain the same number or size of planks. Alternatively, enter confirmed effective plank cover dimensions and the number of planks per box to calculate coverage. Nominal dimensions that include locking edges should not be treated as installed cover without confirmation. Do not combine different products into one coverage figure.
Cutting allowance and leftover flooring
The flooring allowance is an explicit estimating input, not a universal recommendation. Direction, narrow rooms, doorways, pattern, cuts and whether offcuts can be reused affect the required amount. The example starts at an editable 10%; it is not a guarantee for straight, diagonal or herringbone work. Extra supplied area includes both the chosen allowance and the rounding to full boxes. It does not all represent reusable spare boards, and this tool does not produce a plank-by-plank layout.
Underlay for laminate flooring
Choose separate underlay rolls only when the product and subfloor specification require that purchase. Enter the actual usable roll coverage and a separate allowance for the underlay layout. The roll estimate uses net floor area with that underlay allowance, not the area of unopened spare laminate boxes. A product with attached backing may have different requirements; adding another layer without approval can be unsuitable. Moisture-control membranes, sealed joints and edge details are separate specification questions and are not automatically supplied by an acoustic underlay.
Worked packs and underlay example
A 5 m by 4 m room has 20 m² net area if there are no deductions. An entered 10% flooring allowance gives 22 m². With a confirmed 2.2 m² per box, buy 10 boxes supplying 22 m². If the plan requires separate underlay, a hypothetical usable roll coverage of 10 m² with a separate 5% allowance gives 21 m² required and three whole rolls. These coverage figures and allowances are examples, not a standard box size, roll size or product recommendation.

Frequently asked questions
How many boxes of laminate flooring do I need?
Multiply net area by one plus your allowance percentage, divide by the selected box coverage and round up. Use the actual product label.
How much flooring is in one box?
It varies by product. Enter the printed m² coverage, or confirmed effective plank cover dimensions and planks per box.
Can I calculate more than one room?
Yes. Add non-overlapping room or area lines. The result pools the same flooring product across those lines before rounding to boxes.
Does this work in square feet?
Yes. Room measurements and deductions can use feet and ft². Product pack coverage stays in m², and the result shows both m² and ft².
How much underlay do I need?
If separate rolls are required, the tool uses net area plus a separately entered underlay allowance and rounds to whole rolls.
Is 10% waste always enough?
No. It is an editable example allowance, not a layout guarantee. Confirm the allowance for the pattern, cuts and installation plan.
