How to Square a Building Foundation

Check a planned rectangular foundation outline using its intended side lengths and both diagonals. A calculated diagonal helps the arithmetic but does not certify the set-out.

Quick answer: calculate the target diagonal

For a rectangle, target diagonal = √(length² + width²). A 6 m × 8 m outline has a 10 m diagonal. The foundation calculator has separate overall set-out fields so these dimensions do not get confused with individual strip widths or concrete take-off lengths.

Measure the intended outline

Use the appropriate intended reference points from the set-out information, and keep length and width measurements consistent. Check the planned side lengths and opposite sides as well as the two diagonals. Do not use a footing’s concrete width as the building’s overall width.

Compare the two measured diagonals

The tool can show each measurement’s absolute deviation from the target and the difference between the two measurements. For a 10 m target, readings of 9.99 m and 10.02 m differ by 0.03 m, with deviations of 0.01 m and 0.02 m. Those numbers describe the measurements only; they do not decide whether the work is acceptable.

Equal diagonals are not sufficient on their own

Some non-rectangular four-sided outlines can have equal diagonals. Checking only that the diagonals match can therefore miss a wrong shape. Verify the intended side lengths, opposite sides and relevant set-out reference rather than treating a matching pair as an automatic pass.

A square foundation outline

A square uses equal side lengths and has a diagonal of side × √2. For example, a 5 m square has a target diagonal of approximately 7.071068 m. That does not calculate a safe square pad size or approve a building position.

Set-out dimensions are separate from concrete quantities

The displayed outside perimeter is a geometry check, not an automatically measured footing length. Actual strip take-off can depend on reference lines, wall positions, widths, intersections and corners. Keep that quantity schedule separate from the overall rectangle.

Use the project’s survey and tolerance requirements

The calculator applies no universal site tolerance and does not certify boundaries, levels, offsets or survey coordinates. Obtain the required reference information and acceptable tolerances for the actual job. It is a calculation aid, not a replacement for checking the set-out.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula to square a foundation?

For an intended rectangle, calculate the target diagonal with √(length² + width²), then check both diagonals and intended side lengths.

Do matching diagonals prove the outline is square?

No. Check the intended side lengths and opposite sides too. Equal diagonals alone do not prove an arbitrary outline is rectangular.

Does the tool decide the allowed error?

No. It reports measurements and differences without imposing a universal tolerance or pass/fail judgement.
