Paint Coverage: Dulux, Plascon and Primer Data

Compare exact product coverage and coat requirements rather than using one spreading rate for an entire paint brand.

Why paint coverage is product-specific

A brand offers different interior, exterior, textured, roof and preparation coatings. They need not cover the same area from one litre. Use the current data sheet for the exact locally supplied product and finish, not a rate copied from another range. Even a familiar product name can have regional differences. The Paint Calculator is independent of Dulux, Plascon, Jotun, Boysen and Sherwin-Williams and does not load brand coverage presets or stock data.

Per coat and complete-system coverage

Check whether the stated rate is m² per litre for one coat, litres per m², or a quantity for a complete system. This tool takes m²/L per coat. If a compatible specification gives litres per m² per coat, the reciprocal gives m²/L for that same basis. Do not invert a whole-system rate and then apply an additional coat count without reconciling the instructions. Some systems state a required film build rather than a generic decorative-paint rate.

Theoretical and practical spreading rates

A theoretical rate provides a starting quantity for specified conditions. Practical consumption may be higher because of substrate profile, absorption, application losses or retained material. Use confirmed practical coverage when available and add only the extra allowance still required. An additional 10% is an editable arithmetic example, not a universal spray-loss rule. Avoid counting the same application loss in both a reduced practical rate and a second allowance.

Separate primer, sealer and finish quantities

A primer has its own coverage, required coats and treated area. It may be needed on only prepared patches or on the full background. A suitable product for a particular drywall, plaster, timber or metal system is not selected by the quantity tool. Follow the specified preparation and compatible coating sequence. Different preparation products should be calculated separately rather than treated as extra finish coats or substituted litre for litre.

Product colour and surface condition

Check the manufacturer’s substrate preparation, permitted thinning, application method and recoat requirements. Strong colour changes or difficult backgrounds may need a different system or additional coats, but the calculator does not decide that from a colour name. Buy the required product, finish and colour in suitable batches. Drying time and permitted recoat time depend on conditions and instructions; the amount of paint does not establish how long a room will take.

Compare a manufacturer calculator fairly

Match the same area, opening deductions, coats, coverage basis, allowance and tin rounding before comparing a Dulux or Plascon result with 99Tools. A Home Depot exterior estimate or Dulux Nigeria product rate is not automatically local South African product data. Jotun protective-coating calculations can include film-thickness and solids requirements outside this decorative quantity model. Use the right specification first, then compare the arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Dulux paint have the same coverage?

No. Use the exact product’s rate and application requirements.

Can I use finish coverage for drywall primer?

Only if the primer specification actually gives that rate. Enter primer data separately.

Is a theoretical spreading rate guaranteed on site?

No. Surface condition and application can change practical consumption.

Does 99Tools automatically select a brand product?

No. You enter the product specification and confirm suitability separately.
