A tile count cannot design solar mounting
Solar installation adds loads and weatherproofing details beyond a main-field tile quantity. The selected mounting system must suit the roof structure, covering, exposure and proposed panel arrangement. The Roof Tile Calculator does not calculate anchor spacing, wind uplift, structural adequacy, electrical protection or compliance requirements.
Identify the roof and support
Record the tile profile and condition, roof pitch, structural support type and mounting-system requirements. Concrete and clay tiles are coverings, not an automatic description of the supporting structure. The installer needs to assess the roof rather than relying on a photograph or a generic product name to decide attachment details.
Use system-specific fixing details
A tile-roof mounting system may use components that transfer loads to the intended structural support while maintaining clearances and weatherproofing. Follow the selected manufacturer’s design and installation documentation. Do not assume a generic screw through a tile is an adequate anchor or a complete waterproofing solution. Different roof and mounting combinations require different details.
Protect the roof covering
Mounting work must account for tile profile, any required replacement or adapted components, flashing and underlay details. Ask how the system preserves drainage and avoids unintended loading or damage to the covering. A sealant applied around an improvised penetration does not establish the performance of the entire mounting arrangement.
Plan spare tiles and access
Ask the installer whether matching spare field tiles or accessories are needed and include those separately in the roof material order. Roof condition, access arrangements and future maintenance can affect the scope. The calculator’s waste allowance is a purchasing input; it does not predict the number of tiles damaged by an installation.
Compare complete solar quotations
Obtain a scope covering the compatible mounting system, structural checks where required, roof interfaces, electrical installation and commissioning. Roof tile prices and mounting-component prices are separate budgets. Use a competent installer and the applicable local requirements. This guide identifies planning questions and does not provide a universal drilling, anchoring or electrical installation procedure.
Installing solar panels on a roof: cost scope
A mounting quote and a complete solar installation quote cover different work. Ask whether assessment, mounting, roof interfaces, equipment, electrical work, commissioning and any roof repairs are included. Removal and reinstatement for later roof replacement can be additional scope. Enter a confirmed solar-related total in the Roof Cost Calculator only once. The calculator does not size panels, estimate savings or assign a price from roof area alone.

Frequently asked questions
How many roof tiles do I need per m²?
Use installed coverage for the exact product and laying conditions. There is no universal rate for concrete, clay, slate and tile-profile steel sheets.
How many roof tiles are in a pallet?
Pack quantities vary by product and supplier. Enter the actual units per pack or pallet from your selected quote.
Can I calculate a hip roof?
Yes, using its measured total sloping field area. Enter hip/ridge accessories separately; the tool does not derive complex roof geometry or hip lengths from one rectangle.
Is this a Cashbuild or Marley roof tile calculator?
No. 99Tools is independent. You can enter the exact product coverage, pack count and quote from the chosen supplier or manufacturer.
How much does one roof tile cost?
Use a current quote for the exact profile, finish and location. The calculator estimates purchased material cost from your inputs rather than loading live prices.
Does it calculate paint, waterproofing or solar mounting?
No. Those need their own product coverage, compatible systems and roof assessment. Optional quoted material allowances do not establish installation suitability.
Can I use a UK or Australian product rate?
Only if it is confirmed for the exact product and installation being purchased. This page focuses on South Africa and does not assume overseas rates match local items.
