Rhodes converts each subject percentage directly into points, rather than grouping marks into achievement levels.

Rhodes APS = English Points + SUM( Best 5 Other Subjects, excluding Life Orientation )
Every subject you passed above 40% is converted into points by dividing the percentage by 10. English is always counted, and the calculator fills the remaining 5 places with your best-scoring subjects. If you entered more than 5 other subjects, the calculator automatically drops your lowest-scoring one so only your best 5 count. Life Orientation is never included in the Rhodes APS total, regardless of your mark.

Rhodes University APS: The Complete Guide
Rhodes University uses its own admission point score method that differs from most other South African universities. Rather than converting percentages into achievement levels from 1 to 7, Rhodes uses the percentage itself, divided by 10, to calculate each subject’s points. Knowing your Rhodes APS helps you see whether you meet the minimum academic requirement for your chosen programme, though final admission depends on more than APS alone.
How is the Rhodes APS calculated?
The percentages you achieved in your National Senior Certificate examinations, whether preliminary or final, are used directly to calculate your points for each subject. Rhodes adds together six subject scores, always including English and any other subject required for your specific programme, and excluding Life Orientation. A result below 40% in any subject does not attract a score.
Why does Rhodes use percentages instead of levels?
Because Rhodes works with your actual percentage rather than a 1 to 7 achievement level, the resulting APS is more precise. On the standard level-based scale, an 81% and an 89% both fall into Level 7 and score the same. Under the Rhodes method, an 81% becomes 8.1 points while an 89% becomes 8.9 points, so stronger performance within the same level still adds extra value to your total.
Compulsory subjects
English is always included in your Rhodes APS total, regardless of which other subjects you offer. Some programmes also require specific additional subjects to be counted, such as Mathematics for certain Science or Commerce degrees. This calculator counts English plus your best 5 other subjects, but you should confirm any programme-specific subject requirements directly with Rhodes University.
What about Mathematics Paper 3?
Mathematics Paper 3 does not contribute to your Rhodes APS score. Faculties may still take your Paper 3 result into account when making a final admission decision, but it is not added to your points total.
What Rhodes APS do you need?
- Minimum entry: You need a National Senior Certificate with Bachelor’s Pass status to be considered for undergraduate degree study at Rhodes.
