The UFS APS Formula
UFS uses its own Admission Point scale, shifted one point higher than the standard national scale, then adds a possible Life Orientation bonus.
LO Bonus = 1 Point if Life Orientation is 60% or higher, otherwise 0
Total APS = Base APS + LO Bonus

UFS APS Score: The Complete Guide
The University of the Free State uses an Admission Point Score to screen applicants before programme-specific subject requirements are considered. UFS follows the general South African APS approach, but its own points table and treatment of Life Orientation differ from many other universities, so it is worth understanding before you apply.
How is APS calculated at UFS?
Your final mark in each subject is converted into an Admission Point value using the UFS AP scale, which runs from 0 to 8. UFS then adds together your best 6 academic subjects to get your base APS. Life Orientation is not included with the other 6 subjects, but it can add a single bonus point if you scored Level 5, 60% or higher, in that subject.

This scale is one point higher across most bands than the standard 7-point scale used elsewhere. A subject scored at 80 to 89% earns 7 UFS AP points rather than 6, for example.
How does Life Orientation affect your UFS APS?
Life Orientation is treated differently at UFS than most other subjects. It is never added into your best 6 subjects, and it does not use the full 0 to 8 point scale. Instead, it contributes a flat 1 bonus point if your mark is 60% or higher, and 0 points if it is below 60%. Scoring 65% or 95% in Life Orientation makes no difference, both only add 1 point.
What is a good APS score for UFS?
Requirements vary by faculty and programme. As a general guide, an APS around 20 opens the door to many entry-level programmes, while competitive fields such as Medicine, Architecture, or Actuarial Science typically require considerably higher scores, often in the mid-30s or above.
Does meeting the minimum APS guarantee admission?
No. UFS admission is merit-based and programmes with limited space prioritise applicants with the highest APS, so meeting the published minimum only means your application will be considered. Applicants are encouraged to aim above the stated minimum where possible.
Tips for improving your APS
- Focus on your strongest 6 subjects. Only your best 6 academic subjects count toward the base APS, so concentrate on the subjects closest to the next AP band.
- Aim for 60% or higher in Life Orientation. This unlocks the 1 bonus point, which can matter at the margin for competitive programmes.
- Check subject-specific requirements early. A strong APS is not enough if your programme requires a specific level in Mathematics or Physical Sciences.
- Consider a supplementary exam. If your APS falls short, rewriting one subject can move you up an AP band.
- Apply early. Since admission is merit-based and space is limited, applying with strong Grade 11 or prelim results early can help your chances.
