UWC APS Calculator: Calculate Your University of the Western Cape Admission Point Score

Work out your Admission Point Score for the University of the Western Cape before you apply. UWC uses a weighted points system rather than the standard 42 point scale, so this calculator uses UWC’s own weighting for English, Mathematics, Life Orientation and your best other subjects.

UWC APS Calculator

Enter the percentage you scored in each subject, then press Calculate. UWC counts 7 subjects: English, an Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and your best 3 other subjects.

This only labels your result in the summary below, it does not change the calculation.
Home Language or First Additional Language. UWC weights English on its higher points scale.
Your second official language, counted on UWC’s standard subject scale.
Mathematics is weighted on UWC’s higher points scale. Mathematical Literacy is counted on the standard scale, not the Mathematics scale.
Unlike most universities, UWC includes Life Orientation in the APS total, at a lower maximum than other subjects.
Enter at least 3 subjects. UWC counts your best 3, so if you enter more, the lowest-scoring ones are dropped automatically.

This total adds together your weighted points for English, Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and your best 3 other subjects.

Quick Answer

UWC does not use the standard 42 point APS scale that most South African universities use. Instead, English and Mathematics are converted to points on a higher scale, up to 15 points each, your Additional Language and other subjects are converted on a standard scale up to 8 points each, and Life Orientation is converted on a lower scale up to 3 points. Your total UWC APS adds together English, Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and your best 3 other subjects, out of a possible maximum of 65. Use the calculator above for your own total, and always confirm the exact method on UWC’s official APS calculator page.

How to Use the UWC APS Calculator

Four quick steps to an accurate UWC APS estimate for your application.

  1. 1 Enter your English and Additional Language marks. These are both compulsory subjects at UWC and count toward your APS on different scales.
  2. 2 Choose Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy. Select whichever you took, then enter the percentage you scored.
  3. 3 Add your Life Orientation mark. UWC includes this in your APS, unlike most other South African universities.
  4. 4 Enter your other subjects and press Calculate. Your total UWC APS, points scale and full subject breakdown appear instantly. Use “Copy Result” to save it for your application.

The UWC APS Calculation Formula

UWC weights English and Mathematics more heavily than other subjects, and gives Life Orientation a lower maximum.

Core Points (English, Mathematics) = LOOKUP( Percentage on UWC’s higher points scale, max 15 )
Standard Points (Additional Language, Mathematical Literacy, other subjects) = LOOKUP( Percentage on UWC’s standard scale, max 8 )
Life Orientation Points = LOOKUP( Percentage on UWC’s lower points scale, max 3 )
UWC APS = English + Additional Language + Mathematics (or Mathematical Literacy) + Life Orientation + SUM( Best 3 Other Subjects )

If you entered more than 3 other subjects, the calculator automatically drops your lowest-scoring ones so only your best 3 count toward the total. Mathematical Literacy is always converted on the standard scale rather than the Mathematics scale.

UWC APS Explained: The Complete Guide

The University of the Western Cape uses its own weighted Admission Point Score system, which is different from the standard 42 point scale used by most South African universities. Understanding how UWC weights each subject group helps you see how your marks translate into an APS before you apply.

Why is UWC’s APS different?

Most universities convert every subject to an achievement level from 1 to 7 and add the best 6, leaving out Life Orientation. UWC instead groups subjects into 3 categories with different maximum points. English and Mathematics are treated as core subjects with a higher maximum of 15 points each. Your Additional Language, Mathematical Literacy and other subjects are treated as standard subjects with a maximum of 8 points each. Life Orientation is treated separately with a lower maximum of 3 points.

Which subjects count toward your UWC APS?

UWC’s APS is based on 7 subjects: English, an Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and your best 3 other subjects. If you took more than 3 additional subjects, only the best 3 are counted and the rest are dropped.

Does Mathematical Literacy count the same as Mathematics?

No. Mathematics is weighted on the higher core scale, up to 15 points. Mathematical Literacy is converted on the standard scale used for other subjects, up to 8 points, not the Mathematics scale.

What APS do you need for UWC programmes?

Because UWC’s weighted scale produces a different range of totals to the standard 42 point scale, minimum APS requirements are set per faculty and per programme and can vary significantly from one qualification to another. Always check the current UWC prospectus or UWC’s official APS calculator for the exact minimum required for your chosen programme, since meeting a minimum APS does not guarantee a place.

Methodology

This calculator applies UWC’s published weighted points system, converting English and Mathematics on a higher scale up to 15 points, Additional Language, Mathematical Literacy and other subjects on a standard scale up to 8 points, and Life Orientation on a lower scale up to 3 points. It then sums English, Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and your best 3 other subjects for a maximum of 65 points.

Assumptions used in this calculator

  • Marks are entered as final or predicted NSC subject percentages.
  • Subjects below 20% score 0 points in this calculator.
  • If more than 3 other subjects are entered, the lowest-scoring ones are automatically dropped.
  • Mathematical Literacy is always converted on the standard subject scale, not the Mathematics scale.
  • This calculator does not apply programme-specific subject minimums, such as a required Mathematics level for certain Science or Commerce degrees.

Frequently Asked Questions

UWC uses a weighted system. English and Mathematics are converted on a higher scale up to 15 points each, your Additional Language and other subjects are converted on a standard scale up to 8 points each, and Life Orientation is converted on a lower scale up to 3 points. These are added together with your best 3 other subjects for a total out of 65.

The maximum possible UWC APS is 65 points, achieved with 80% or higher in English, Additional Language, Mathematics and your best 3 other subjects, together with 80% or higher in Life Orientation.

Yes. Unlike most South African universities, UWC includes Life Orientation in the APS total, though at a lower maximum of 3 points compared to other subjects.

Yes, whichever subject you took is counted. Mathematics is converted on UWC’s higher points scale, while Mathematical Literacy is converted on the standard scale used for other subjects. Some programmes require Mathematics specifically, so check programme-level subject requirements separately.

UWC counts 7 subjects: English, an Additional Language, Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and your best 3 other subjects. If you took more than 3 additional subjects, only your best 3 are counted.

Yes, many applicants use their most recent trial exam or predicted marks to estimate their UWC APS ahead of applying. Your final APS is based on your official final NSC results, which may differ from earlier predicted marks. Use the results type selector above to label your entry as Grade 11 Final, Grade 12 Prelim, or Grade 12 Final for your own reference.

No. Meeting the minimum APS requirement only means your application may qualify for consideration. Many programmes also apply subject-specific requirements, limited spaces, or additional selection criteria, so admission is never guaranteed by APS alone.
