How to Build a Realistic Road Trip Budget
A complete road trip budget includes more than fuel. Tolls, overnight stays, meals, parking, activities and a contingency amount can materially change the total.

Separate fixed and shared costs
Fuel, tolls and vehicle costs are often shared, while meals and activities may be per person. Accommodation may be charged per room or per unit, so confirm capacity and extra-person fees before dividing the total.
Budget by travel day
List the distance and overnight stop for each day. Add realistic meal and activity amounts, parking and local transport. Keep prepaid and pay-on-arrival costs separate to understand the cash still required.
Add a contingency
Allow for route changes, price differences and small emergencies. Compare the total with the amount available before booking, and update the budget when accommodation or fuel prices change.
