The Toll Calculation Formula
Toll fees in South Africa are fixed amounts per plaza and vehicle class, not distance-based, so the calculation is a straightforward sum.
If Return Trip: Total Toll Cost = Total Toll Cost × 2
If E-tag applied: Total Toll Cost = Total Toll Cost × (1 − 0.04)
Each toll plaza publishes a fixed tariff per vehicle class, so the calculator simply looks up the correct fee for every gate on your route and adds them together. Distance and driving time do not directly affect the toll amount, only which and how many plazas you pass through.

South Africa’s national road network includes toll roads managed by SANRAL and several private concessionaires, including Bakwena, TRAC and the N3 Toll Concession. Understanding how these fees work, and knowing the cost per plaza, helps you budget accurately for long-distance trips on the N1, N2, N3, N4 and N17.
How are South African toll fees calculated?
Unlike some countries where tolls scale with distance travelled, South African toll roads charge a fixed fee at each individual toll plaza. The amount depends on two things: which plaza you pass through, and which vehicle class your vehicle falls into. A trip’s total toll cost is simply the sum of the fees at every plaza along your chosen route.
Vehicle toll classifications explained
Every toll plaza in South Africa charges according to one of four standard vehicle classes:
- Class 1: Light Vehicles: Cars, motorcycles, sedans, hatchbacks, SUVs and light delivery bakkies.
- Class 2: Medium Vehicles: Small trucks, minibuses and vehicles towing a caravan or trailer.
- Class 3: Large Vehicles: Heavy trucks and buses with two axles.
- Class 4: Extra Large Vehicles: Trucks and buses with three or more axles.
What happened to Gauteng e-tolls?
The Gauteng e-toll system, which used overhead gantries on freeways in Johannesburg and Pretoria, was switched off in 2022 and formally discontinued. Motorists in Gauteng no longer pay e-tolls on those freeway gantries. This is separate from the boom-gate toll plazas covered by this calculator, which remain fully operational on the N1, N2, N3, N4 and N17 national routes.
