Crypto Tax in South Africa Explained

SARS states that normal income tax rules apply to crypto assets and taxpayers must declare taxable gains or losses. The treatment can be revenue or capital depending on the facts.

Revenue or capital treatment

Frequent trading or profit-making activity may have different consequences from a long-term capital investment. There is no single percentage that correctly calculates every crypto transaction.

Records to retain

Keep dates, quantities, Rand values, exchange statements, wallet records, fees and the purpose of each transaction. Swaps and purchases made with crypto can also be relevant because SARS describes crypto-for-goods transactions as barter transactions.

What a calculator can do

A gain calculator can subtract acquisition cost and entered expenses from proceeds. It cannot decide the legal classification, allowable deductions, exclusions or final marginal rate. Use it for organising figures and obtain tax advice for the return.
